Nikhil started off with a 2 set lead with his powerful forehand topspins which the current state topper found hard to return. However, Kalaivanan managed to fight back hard and made it even with his top of the class backhand roll. The deciding set started off very close as each of them took 1 point each and was deuce till 5-5. However Nikhil managed to counter his backhand and capitalize on his mistakes to take the lead and finish it off. It was a thrilling finals between best TamiNadu State players who got bronze medal last year in the National Championships representing the state. They both are currently ranked no 2 and 3 in the State and are expected to represent the state in the upcoming National Championships this year. They are also part of the Madras University team this year.
Thilipan and Nishanth managed to take the lead with their brilliant placements against one of the top doubles pair in the State. They confused the pair with their consistency in the way they varied the pace of the ball during rallies. However, Nikhil and Kalaivanan got back into the game with their excellent services and 1st ball winners which the other pair found hard to return. Their experience helped Nikhil and Kalai beat this 1st time pair as they had a better understanding which helped them to convert their placements into winners.
This match may not have been a 5 setter, but was fully packed with brilliant long rallies. Nishanth, Kalaivanan, Nikhil are a part of the Madras University team for this year. Nikhil and Kalaivanan both received broze medals in doubles at the National Championships held last year at Alleppey, Kerala.
