TNPL update – Thoothukudi Team Mentor Mr Desai Interview
Washington Sundar looks like an exciting talent, says Monty Desai
Chennai: Scouting is Mrugang Desai’s middle name. The Mumbai-based coach unearthed many a talent for Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Lions in the IPL. Appointed the Team Mentor of the Thoothukudi franchise in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), Mr Desai spoke on the sidelines of the Player Draft on Saturday.
“It’s very important to start with a great partnership and this franchise has great local coaches, they have been of immense support to me,” Mr Desai, popularly known as ‘Monty’, said.
During the initial stages of the auction, the franchise had already gone for the experience of Dinesh Karthik while also bagging the most-talked-about Under-19 talent Washington Sunder. The team is very happy with its picks. “We have been talking a lot about Washington Sunder and the possibility of getting him for our team. He is still just an Under-19 player but looks like an exciting talent and our goal is to not only pick players for this edition but those who will work with us in the long run as well,” Mr Desai elaborated.
He also expressed happiness over the TNPL’s goal to develop cricket at the grassroots. A specialist high-performance coach, Mr Desai spoke of the rival teams’ preference for all-rounders. “It is important to strike a balance between youth and experience and that is what we are opting for in our team. Being an all-rounder requires a double skill that needs to come off and I am unsure if the youngsters will be able to pull it off mostly due to lack of exposure.”
