Hero Indian Women’s League 2017-18 Final Round update
Sethu Football Club (Madurai) ease past Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports & Education (Pondicherry) 3-1 for fourth win, firm up semifinal position
Sethu Football Club (Madurai) eased past Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports & Education (Pondicherry) 3-1 for their fourth win in five outings in the Hero Indian Women’s League 2017-18 Final Round in Shillong on Friday to firm up their semifinal position.
Skipper and ace forward Indumathi put the Madurai outfit ahead in the 26th minute with the pass coming from S Geethanjali but Pradeepa Sekar levelled it out for the Pondicherry side eight minutes later as the teams went into halftime at 1-all.
Bangladeshi recruit Sabina Khatun, who has had a spectacular run in the tournament so far, scored twice in the space of eight minutes – Indumathi assisting on both occasions – to seal the deal for Sethu FC who are firmly placed in the second spot.
Sethu FC is the only team from Tamil Nadu in the premier women’s competition organized by the All India Football Federation.
The victory was especially sweet for Sethu FC who had lost to the same opposition in the Qualifier stage in Kolhapur in December.
“It’s a good feeling to win four matches on the trot,” said Sethu FC coach Kalpana Dass. “Indumathi played a key role and Sabina’s finishing was excellent. It was an all-round team effort, be it defence, midfield or the goalkeeper… excellent,” she added.
Sethu FC will take on leaders Eastern Sporting Union (Manipur) on Sunday in their concluding fixture in the seven-team all-play-all league. The top-four will advance to the knockouts.
Sethu FC 3 (Sabina Khatun 75 & 82 ; Indumathi 26,) bt Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports & Education (Pondicherry) 1 (Pradeepa Sekar 34).
