King Pele crowns AIFF juniors

56th Subroto Cup Football Tournament
Final Day foot ball with Pele

New Delhi, October 16: The All India Football Federation FC deservingly emerged as the the Junior Boys (Under-17) champion in the 56th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, which concluded at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.
The AIFF boys defeated Little Angels Paradise School from Wangbal, Manipur, 4-1 to etch their name on the Subroto Trophy in their maiden appearance in the tournament.
What made their win special and worth in gold was when they received the trophy from none other than King Pele, the all-time great and the living legend of football from Brazil. Additionally, the boys beamed from ear to ear when they got the photo-op with the three-time World Cup winner who cheered from the stand.
Just before that the Brazilian great went around the ground in a golf cart, waving to the crowd even as the word, Pele, Pele, wafted through the air. The crowd at the stadium, to a packed capacity, cheered the King of Football as he neared their side of the stand and the dinning noise palpably made Pele know how popular a personality he was in the national capital.
Coming back to the final, it was heavily loaded against one team and that was the Manipur outfit. These Little Angles boys, who have had the best of outings in the tournament, were completely rendered ineffective in the face of a tough opposition from the AIFF squad.
The AIFF, which has a wonderful defence commanded by central defender Amal Das, was in complete control leaving the job of striking goals to their forwards. That had effecting taken the sting out of Manipur attack who found it difficult not only to make inroads but also when they did, on sporadic occasions, to send the ball past AIFF goalkeeper. At the other end, it was a nightmare for Manipur custodian N. Swami.
Yet, it was Manipur which went into lead in the very sixth minute through A.K. Layengamba, on whom the team also depended to deliver. But after this goal, the Manipur team members did not get even once chance to look at the rival goal as they had to in unison concentrate on guarding their citadel. Baoringdao Bodo found the equaliser for AIFF before the teams went for the drinks break.
However, what changed the complexion of the match and shifted the winning quotient towards AIFF were the two goals in a span of two minutes when Rahul Yadav and Edmund struck. This not only placed AIFF safe and secure but also put a lot of pressure on Little Angels boys who were striving hard to equalize.
But it was not to be as Nijwa Muchahary rubbed more salt into the Manipur wounds to seal the fate in the 65th minute. With time running out, the northeastern team also ran out of ideas and surrendered to the superiority of AIFF.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha PVSM AVSM VM ADC presented a memento to the living football legend. Ambassador of Brazil Mr. Tovar DeSilva Nunes was also present for the finals and shared a good time with the King of Football. In the end the fireworks started from all the corners and added beautiful colours to the sky.
There were several big rewards followed by awards which members of both teams received to draw the curtains on another great season of Subroto Football.
