56th Subroto Cup Football TournamentNew Delhi, October 8: Pune FC, playing their first league game, sounded a warning to the rest of teams in pool H, as they beat Bengaluru FC 5-0 to make a good opening in the Junior Boys (Under-17) of the 56th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here today. In another match at the venue, Jharkhand inflicted a similar verdict over TAFS in pool E. In another pool H match, two big Kolkata’s teams Mohung Bagan and East Bengal FCs met and ended their opening engagement in a deadlock as the teams drew goalless. With the D-Day just a little over a week away, the urgency of teams to get on top was visible in all the matches that were played today. However, with the format allowing just one team from each pool to qualify for the knockout phase, it is in the realm of conjecture as to which among these will make the grade. Nevertheless, the approach of big teams is palpable as all of them want to grab the first opportunity to score as there is no space for any squandering to do. Pune FC began with a goal in the seventh minute through Bunthanglun and teammate Lalan consolidated. By the time they went for the break, they had taken an unassailable lead of 3-0 when Kiran Sar scored. On resumption, both Bunthanglun and Lalan added to their own tally to complete the rout. As for the Jharkand team, it was rather in an undue hurry to open the account. Michael struck in the 16th & 35th minute and B. Lungdim and B. Meitei found the net in24th & 56th minute to go 3-0 up. Soon after it was the turn of Mollal to score in 69th minute and he did in style to score a brace, completely demoralizing their TAFS opponents. As for the two Kolkatan clubs the less said was the better. As is their wont, the teams were keener on safety than really trying to score against each other. The morning matches at NWC ground happened to be foregone conclusions with stronger teams beating the weaker ones as one witnessed between the Goa outfit and Lakshadweep’s team. The Goan boys defeated Lakshadweep 4-0 without a whimper in Pool F. In another match in the same pool, Chhattisgarh’s St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School downed Haryana’s Delhi Public School (Panipat) 6-0. Sadin Gaonkar found the net as early as in the second minute for Goa while Glevito Miranda consolidated in the 24th minute before Mark Baratto striking twice in 38th & 47th minute to put the issue beyond Lakshadweep. Chander P Kumar started the proceedings with a goal in the ninth minute for Chhattisgarh and teammates Ujeet Markam taking 3 goals to his credit in 23rd, 30th & 68th minute, Anand Kumar and Pradeep Bhagat complete the task. Markam scored a brace. In comparison to what happened at NWC, the Pool E league match between IPSC and Tripura Sports School (Agartala) was evenly matches with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Aayush Steve put IPSC in lead in the 10 th minute but they could not hold on to it as Akash Tripura equalized just before the break. After that none had the urge to go for another goal and earn full points.
