Sethu FC (Madurai) go down to ESU (Manipur) in semifinals
Sethu Football Club (Madurai) went down 2-0 to Eastern Sporting Union (Manipur) – both goals coming in extra-time – in a thrilling semifinal in the Hero Indian Women’s League 2017-18 Final Round in Shillong on Thursday.
The only team from Tamil Nadu in the premier women’s competition, the young, spirited outfit reached the last-four stage in what was only their second National-level tournament following the Qualifiers in December.
Sethu FC goalkeeper N Sowmiya came up with two excellent saves while substitutes A Karthika and Manisha took good attempts at the goal in the second half as the teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time.
However, the more experienced Manipur team took control in extra-time with Y Premi Devi and M Mandakani Devi scoring, and while Sethu FC did have their chances in the 30-minute long extra-time (15+15) they failed to convert them.
“Given that our girls are comparatively inexperienced, I am really proud that they stood their ground for a good part of the game and played well,” Sethu FC coach Kalpana Dass said. “ESU are a superior side and took the game away in extra-time but I am happy with our performance,” she added.
Sethu FC qualified to the semifinals as the third team (13 points) from the seven-team league and were involved in a 1-1 draw with Eastern Sporting Union in the league phase.
