Sethu Football Club (Madurai) hold Eastern Sporting Union (Manipur) to 1-1 draw in last league game, qualify for semifinals
Sethu Football Club (Madurai) held group toppers Eastern Sporting Union (Manipur) to a 1-1 draw in their sixth and final outing in the Hero Indian Women’s League 2017-18 Final Round in Shillong on Sunday to finish the group phase with 13 points and a place in the semifinals.
Skipper and ace forward Indumathi scored the equaliser in the 13th minute after Wayenbam Ranjibala Devi put the Manipur outfit ahead in the fourth minute in an intense clash that saw the Madurai team take some good shots at the goal.
Sethu FC is the only team from Tamil Nadu in the premier women’s competition organized by the All India Football Federation and the young, spirited outfit have reached the last-four stage in what is only their second National tournament.
“Our girls played remarkably well to hold a high-quality Manipur side who are favourites and had local support,” said Sethu FC coach Kalpana Dass. “We had our chances but missed a few but I still think this draw is a big morale booster for us,” she added.
